The pair are the principal scientific leads at Delta’s two current university partners, and their collaboration sits at the heart of the company’s Centre of Excellence model.
So that makes this discussion a great chance to hear more about what Delta is building, why gold and other materials have a key role to play in the quantum revolution, and how university-led research is translating into valuable intellectual property.

1) Delta is taking aim at quantum’s stability-versus-scalability problem
Delta is addressing one of the biggest hurdles in quantum computing: how to create qubits that are both stable and scalable.
For context, qubits are the building blocks of quantum computers. They can hold information in more complex ways than ordinary bits, giving quantum machines their potential power.
But they have to be controlled.
Dr Knappenberger frames the problem as a trade-off. Some systems are highly stable because they’re isolated and protected from interference, but that makes them difficult to scale. Others look more scalable, but become harder to control as they get denser.
That’s the gap Delta is targeting.
The discussion makes the prize clear. Without stable, scalable qubits, the quantum revolution remains stuck behind one of its biggest bottlenecks.
2) Gold may be the answer to the qubit dilemma
Delta believes gold and other materials could offer a new way through today’s qubit challenge.
This might not be what investors think of first when they think about gold. But at the nanoscale, the precious metal behaves in unusual ways. The discussion explores how gold-based systems may support stable quantum behaviour, while also being produced and manipulated in ways that could support scale.
Michael describes gold as one of the keys to opening a “new hallway”—and that’s a key point.
Much of the quantum sector is already moving down routes such as trapped ions, superconducting systems and diamonds. Some may be further ahead, but if they can’t overcome stability and scalability, they may not deliver the quantum advantage the industry is chasing. The “hallways” could end up blocked.
Delta’s approach is to go back to the fundamentals and explore whether gold can help open a better route—for the company, and perhaps for the wider world of quantum.
3) Chemistry—the great differentiator?
Chemistry also comes through as a major part of the story.
Quantum has often been led by physics, engineering and materials science. But Dr Knappenberger argues chemistry brings something powerful: the ability to tune and tailor materials.
His analogy is evocative—if someone gives you food but you can never season it, you’re stuck with what you have. It’s through cooking that you refine the result.
That’s the role chemistry could play here.
For Delta, this means the opportunity isn’t only about finding gold-based materials with interesting quantum properties. It’s about whether those properties can be adjusted for different uses.
A system that can be tuned could therefore be more flexible than one where the underlying material is fixed, which may be important in the search for stable, scalable qubits.
4) The Centre of Excellence model is taking shape
The discussion also brings Delta’s Centre of Excellence model into sharper focus.
Delta isn’t relying on one lab or one academic idea. Its model is to fund research at leading universities, bring specialist teams together, and seek rights to the intellectual property generated from that work.
The fireside chat gives investors a glimpse of that model in action.
Michael noted that Dr Ruda and Dr Knappenberger had only met for the first time in person the day before, yet their interaction had already sparked conversations around how their different approaches could inform one another.
That’s exactly the kind of collaboration Delta is trying to create.
The network could also expand. Michael refers to ongoing discussions with UK universities and suggested there are additional professors Delta would like to bring into the team.
So, Delta isn’t trying to build a quantum computer in a silo. It’s positioning itself at the centre of a specialist research network and building an IP portfolio around the discoveries that emerge.
5) The next milestones are patents, people and market recognition
Michael and the professors are also asked how this big science translates into commercial progress and, ultimately, shareholder value.
The answer was clear enough: patents, team-building and capital markets recognition.
Delta has already started delivering on that front. Patent applications have emerged from its university-backed research. The company has expanded its Penn State relationship, continued its University of Toronto work and brought in specialist intellectual property support.
In a story like this, near-term value is unlikely to come from revenue. It’s more likely to come from technical progress, protectable IP, deeper partnerships and growing recognition of the potential prize.
That’s why the people and the academic institutions matter so much.
If Delta can keep attracting serious scientific talent and turning research into protected intellectual property, the investment case should continue to gain substance.
Why all this matters
The fireside chat adds useful substance to what is already an engaging story gaining significant attention in the market. Indeed, shares in Delta have already risen by more than 1,200% since its UK listing in December.
The company’s still early-stage, and the science still has to progress. But it’s giving the market a clearer look at the people, thinking and technical direction behind its university-backed research model.
That matters as Delta looks to build recognition beyond its existing UK investor base.
The US remains the natural home of much of the quantum industry, with major technology companies, specialist investors, deep pools of capital and growing government interest in quantum leadership.
If Delta can continue building its IP portfolio while raising awareness in that market, the story could start to attract a wider audience.
